Chennai Central Railway Station - year 2011

Chennai Central Railway Station
Chennai Central Railway Station
This picture was taken in 2011 when I have visited Chennai for the first time. The iconic structure of this station is being maintained from the British era. Just outside this station city bus stand was built. Earlier during British era, there use to be tram line crossing the station. After the Independence, tram public transport was replaced with full city buses.

Local train station is situated just beside this central railway station. Chennai metro city is very well connected with public rail and road transport. This station used to called as Madras Central station and that is reason why this station has code MAS. Recently station name was changed as "Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station" in tribute to the MGR sir - a great actor, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. After getting this new name to the sation, It became the longest station name in Indian railways.

Chennai central station has name "central" included is because of the fact that all the trains arriving this station from one direction and return in the same direction. It is the biggest and busiest station in southern railway zone.

The road shown in the above picture is the general hospital road. There is a local train station called Chennai Park and Chennai Park Town at a walk-able distance from Chennai central. People will cross this road to reach the Chennai park town station.

You can view some of the other pics i have captured at central station.
