Its long legs help it to venture further into the water than most other waders. It is a lanky, white bird with black wings, a straight, long, black beak and thin , long red legs. During the breeding season the male sports a black cap. It picks up prey from the water surface and also probes in soft mud for worms, molluscs and aquatic insects while sweeping the bill from from side to side. The wader is also a good swimmer.
